Breaking Barriers: Supporting Women in STEM

April 30, 2024

As I stand on the precipice of a new chapter in my academic journey, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and headed to pursue my PhD at the University of Kentucky, I can't help but reflect on the journey that brought me here. It's a journey marked not just by personal achievements, but also by the challenges faced by women in STEM, challenges that persist despite the strides we've made.

One of the most disheartening realities I've encountered is the prevalence of women pitted against other women in STEM fields. From subtle competitiveness to outright hostility, these behaviors undermine the collective progress we strive for. Instead of lifting each other up, we find ourselves mired in comparison and rivalry.

But why does this happen? Perhaps it's rooted in the scarcity mindset ingrained in us by societal norms that suggest there's only room for a few women at the top. Maybe it's fueled by the pressure to prove ourselves in male-dominated spaces, leading to a misguided belief that we must outshine our female peers to succeed. Whatever the reasons, the consequences are clear: fractured communities and missed opportunities for collaboration and support.

As I embark on the next phase of my academic journey, I am more committed than ever to breaking down these barriers. I believe that by lifting as we climb, we can create a more inclusive and empowering environment for all women in STEM. Here are a few ways we can start:

1. Celebrate Each Other's Successes: Instead of viewing other women's achievements as threats to our own progress, let's celebrate them as victories for all of us.

2. Create Mentorship Opportunities: As we navigate the challenges of academia and beyond, mentorship can be invaluable. Let's actively seek out opportunities to mentor and be mentored by other women, offering guidance, support, and encouragement along the way.

3. Foster a Culture of Collaboration: Collaboration lies at the heart of scientific discovery and innovation. By fostering a culture of collaboration rather than competition, we can leverage our collective strengths to tackle complex problems and drive meaningful change.

4. Speak Up Against Bias and Discrimination: All of us need to challenge bias and discrimination wherever we encounter it. Whether it's confronting microaggressions in the lab or advocating for inclusive policies within our institutions, let's use our voices to create a more equitable and supportive environment for women in STEM.

As I look ahead to the challenges and opportunities that await me in graduate school, I am filled with hope and determination. Together, we can dismantle the barriers that divide us and build a future where every woman in STEM is valued, supported, and empowered to reach her full potential. Let's rise above the fray and lift each other up, because when women support women, we all succeed.
